Meet my little polka dot plant, Hypoestes 'Polka Dot'! This charming plant is native to South Africa, Madagascar, and south east Asia. It's a lively and beautiful little thing with brightly spotted leaves that stand out especially well against other plants. Put them in a mass of ferns or ivies, and their colors will stand out in bright contrast. In colder climates, it's an annual plant, expected to live for about one year and die off after its sprout. In tropical climates, it's a perennial that lives a long time.
Granny's Care Instructions:
- Lighting: This plant loves bright, indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, so make sure to filter the light with a sheer curtain.
- Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch.
- Humidity: This plant thrives in humid environments. You can increase the humidity around your plant by placing it on a tray filled with water and pebbles or using a humidifier.
- Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix to prevent waterlogged soil. A mix with peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite works well.
- Fertilizer: Feed your plant with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer). Dilute the fertilizer to half the recommended strength to avoid burning the roots.
- Temperature: This plant prefers temperatures between 65°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C). Avoid placing it near drafts or extreme temperatures.
Follow these care instructions, and your polka dot plant will thrive under your care!
